Wi-Fi QR code format
The WIFI: payload string that joins a network without typing the password.
Key facts
| Scheme | WIFI: |
|---|---|
| Security field | T:WPA, WEP or nopass |
| SSID | S:<name> |
| Password | P:<password> |
| Hidden network | H:true |
| Terminator | Double semicolon (;;) |
| Escaping | Backslash before ; , : or \ |
Anatomy of the payload
A typical string is WIFI:T:WPA;S:MyNetwork;P:correct horse;H:false;;. The scanner parses key–value pairs separated by semicolons and stops at the double semicolon. Android and iOS both understand this convention, which is why the same code works across phones even though it is not an ISO standard.
Escaping and edge cases
If the SSID or password contains ;, ,, : or a backslash, escape it with a backslash or the parser will split the field. Open networks use T:nopass and omit the password. Hidden networks add H:true; without it, some phones will not join a network that does not broadcast its SSID.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Wi-Fi QR code expose the password?
Yes. Anyone who scans it can read the credentials. Print it only for networks you are willing to share, and rotate the password if a code leaks.
Which security type should I use?
Use WPA for WPA2/WPA3 networks. WEP is legacy and insecure; nopass is for open networks.
Why does my phone refuse to join?
Check escaping in the SSID or password, confirm the security type and add H:true for a hidden network.
